Visual: Fantasy interrupted!

By On 22 February 2006

Soon to be changed exhibit at esplanade. boy will i miss seeing those flowy fabrics, tie-dye creativity from Jerri Then at the concourse in esplanade. Entitled fantasy, this installation piece was made from recycled fabrics dyed in different shapes of red and pink.

It was nice seeing throngs of visitors crowding around the exhibit marvelling at the beauty of it all.

But what got me really pissed was the way people ‘interact’ with the installation. Ignoring the signs that said do not touch the artwork, tonnes of visitors frolicked around the installation. Sure it’s nice to pretend you’re some hero or heroine in Chinese period drama wandering through the fabric maze (think Maggie Cheung and Jet Li in Hero) but really those art works were meant to be seen not felt. I think it’s high time visitors paid respect to art works that are meant to be appreciated not violated in the first place.

So next time you guys happen to be looking at art works installations, statues, paintings and the likes….do refrain from touching them unless you need them to save a life or something.
